If you’re travelling on a budget saving your money whenever you can is very important. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up over the past year whenever I’ve been travelling for a few months at a time.

Cook for yourself

This might not work for everyone; it really just depends on your situation. If you’re staying somewhere that has some form of cooking facilities this can save you so much money in the long run. Even if you don’t have these facilities a loaf of bread can go a long way too, you can have sandwiches on the go and avoid spending when you’re out exploring. Then it’s just a matter of eating out once a day as opposed to 3 times.

Use public transport

Public transport is the cheapest way of getting around any city. If you plan on using a lot of public transport most cities offer passes for unlimited, or at least a cheaper rate of travel. Its best to research where you’re staying and if you’ll need a lot of transportation when you are there. Saving money this way is great for people who want to make their money go a long way whole travelling.

Ridesharing apps

If public transport isn’t your thing then your next best bet is Uber. One tap of a button and within minutes a car will come to collect you and take you where you need to go. All of the payment is handled through the app so there’s no need to tip. Recently Uber have brought in UberPOOL. This allows you to get an even lower rate on your ride. It matches you with riders heading in a similar direction and picks them up along the way to bring down the fare. You can sign up for an Uber account here and save $10 on your first ride here.

Talk to Locals

Locals know all the best places to get deals in the area you are in. Whether it is the cheapest places to buy groceries or the best bar to go for a drink, locals will point you in the right direction. You might even get a free place to stay in return for putting them up if they are ever out your way.

Airbnb

Airbnb is a great way of finding cheap accommodation and saving money while travelling. It is a very reliable way of connecting a host, who has a space to rent, with a guest who is looking for somewhere to stay. Prices on Airbnb vary significantly depending on what your needs are and where you are looking to stay but it is usually much cheaper than staying in a hotel. You can sign up for an Airbnb account and receive a $30 discount on your first booking here.
